GRE Math Quantitative Comparison Challenge Question:

Thomas sent applications to be accepted by each of Universities X and Y.
The probability that Thomas will be accepted by University X is 0.3.
The probability that Thomas will be accepted by University Y is 0.5.
The acceptance of Thomas by one of universities X and Y is independent of the acceptance of Thomas by the other university.

Quantity A
The probability that Thomas will be accepted by at least one of universities Xand Y

Quantity B
0.73

A) Quantity A is greater.
B) Quantity B is greater.
C) The two quantities are equal.
D) The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.

Solution:

Correct Choice: B

The probability of an event occurring is equal to 1 minus the probability that the event does not occur. It is easier for us to find the probability that Thomas will not be accepted to either of universities X and Y and then subtract that probability from 1.

The probability that Thomas will not be accepted by University X is 1 – 0.3 = 0.7.

The probability that Thomas will not be accepted by University Y is 1 – 0.5 = 0.5.

So the probability that Thomas will not be accepted by either of universities X and Y is (0.7)(0.5) = 0.35.

Then the probability that Thomas will be accepted by at least one of universities X and Y is 1 – 0.35 = 0.65.

Quantity A is 0.65 and Quantity B is 0.73. Quantity B is greater and Choice (B) is correct.
