You are considered a SEVIS- transfer student if you are:

1. currently at another U.S. school (high school or secondary),
2. on OPT or AT, or
3. will be studying in an English as a Second Language program before coming to the University
  • Your existing F-1 or J-1 student record must be transferred from your current institution to another University.
  • If you are finishing OPT, you can transfer your SEVIS record during the 60 day grace period following OPT.
  • If you are finishing AT, you can transfer your SEVIS record during the 30 day grace period following AT.

Definition of SEVIS Transfer:

A “transfer” of your F-1/J-1 SEVIS record from one education institution in the US to another, in order to continue your F-1/J-1 status. This includes students completing an English Language program and starting at the University.

Advantages to transferring your SEVIS record:

Eligibility: You are eligible to transfer your status to another university as long as your classes here start within 5 months of the end date of your current program or OPT end date.

  • You do not have to depart and re-enter the U.S. in between your programs if your are a SEVIS transfer student.
  • Transfer of your SEVIS record also allows you to use your current F-1 or J-1 visa if it hasn't expired.
  • You do not have to pay the SEVIS fee again since you have the same SEVIS number.
You are immediately eligible for on-campus employment at the U of C once you receive your I-20 or DS-2019 from our office. If you have been enrolled full-time at your previous institution for at least one academic year, you may also be immediately eligible to apply for off-campus work authorization under OPT, CPT, or AT.

Steps to transfer your record:

1. Complete the transfer-in form and submit it to the international student office at your current school. Be sure to tell your current adviser when you want your SEVIS record to be transferred.

Your international student adviser must fax or email the completed form to the university.
