After you have gone through all the procedures and getting an admit to a University, your next step would be packing things that you need to carry with you to US or any other country. The first stage of packing would be purchasing suitcases. It’s really important that you purchase the right suitcase so that you do not have any troubles while travelling to your destination. This post will entirely focus on the suitcases that you can purchase for your travel.
Suitcase Brands That You Can Go For:
I would recommend that you go for Branded Suitcases rather than going for some ordinary suitcases. You can purchase suitcases of the following brands like VIP, Samsonite or the American Tourister. Generally I would recommend going for either VIP or Samsonite.
Types Of Suitcases: -
The types are for the Big Suitcases in which you will be placing your clothes and utensils. Generally there are three types of suitcases available for your international travel and they are as follows: -
- Soft. (2.5 to 3 Kg)
- Semi-Hard. (4 to 4.5 Kg)
- Hard. (6.5 to 7 Kg)
The weights that are listed above are of the Suitcases itself.
Which Type Of Suitcase To Go For: -
Many websites suggest that you have to purchase a Soft Type Suitcase for keeping your clothes and Semi-Hard for keeping your utensils and other stuffs. But my opinion would be to go for Semi-Hard Type of Suitcase for both Clothes and Utensils. The reason for that is the Soft Type of Suitcases though light in weight, cannot handle the wear and tear that takes place during your travel to USA or any other country. So it’s a good option to go with a sturdy Semi-Hard Suitcases for your clothes and utensils as well.
Hard Type of Suitcase is not advisable as its weight itself is between 6.5 to 7 Kgs. So you won’t be able to carry a lot of things as your suitcase can be overweight after you pack your things.
TSA Locks For Suitcases: -
If you are not aware about the TSA Locks then kindly go through this post at first before reading below: TSA Locks For Your Baggages. VIP Suitcases comes along with TSA Locks. Samsonite and American Tourister has normal locks. So if you are planning to purchase a Samsonite or American Tourister Suitcase then in that case you have to purchase the TSA Locks separately.
Weight Of Check-In And Hand Baggages: -
Check-In Baggages are Baggages that you won’t be carrying along with you in the plane but you would be putting it in the luggage. Officially Airlines allow 1 Bag of weight 23 Kgs per person as a check-in Baggage. Students who are travelling with F-1 Visa get some concessions and allowances. For Example: British Airlines allows you to check-in one additional Bag of 23 Kgs. So in all you can check-in 2 Baggages. To get to know more about Airlines that give such concessions, please click this link: Booking Your International Flight.
With Respect to your Hand Baggages, the maximum weight allowed is 7 Kgs. But this too differs with respect to the Airline. It’s a good practice to look into all these details before you book the airline.
Size Of Check-In And Hand Baggages: -
The maximum Size allowed for Check-In Baggages are of the following dimensions: 90cm x 75cm x 43cm (35.5in x 29.5in x 16 in), including the handle, pockets and wheels. This is with respect to a particular airline (British Airlines). This differs from one to another Airlines. Many Airlines also have a rule that your Baggage size should not exceed 158 cm or 62 inches (length+breadth+weight). It’s a good practice to check this information from the official airline site and then purchase your suitcases accordingly.
The maximum Size allowed for Hand Baggages are of the following dimensions: 56cm x 45cm x 25cm (22in x 18in x 10in), including the handle, pockets and wheels. This is with respect to a particular airline (British Airlines).
In some Airlines you are allowed to carry an additional laptop Bag along with your one Hand Baggage. Kindly confirm this information with your Airline because some of the Airlines don’t allow an extra Laptop Bag. In that case you are forced to keep your laptop within your Hand Baggage.
