Every Day, we’ll be posting up a free practice question from our database:
The questions will be drawn from various question types and topics, so this will be a good way to get some extra practice on a weekly basis and feedback when it comes to strategies and methods!
Here’s the first question:

GRE Practice question of the Day 1

Geometry

If square ABCD has area 25, and the area of the larger shaded square is 9 times the area of the smaller shaded square, what is the length of one side of the smaller shaded square?
Note: Figure not drawn to scale
A. 3/4
B. 5/4
C. 6/5
D. 4/3
E. 5/3

Answer:

The answer is 5/4, and here’s why:

Area of square ABCD = 25 so side = 5

Side of small shaded square = x
Side of large shaded square = 5-x

(5-x)^2 / x^2 = 9
5-x/x = 3
5-x = 3x
4x=5
x=5/4

The answer is B) 5/4
