How Long LOR (Letters Of Recommendation) is Valid?
I got a query from one of the student stating that “i have a doubt… say suppose i apply for fall 2013, and for some reason i am unable to go for this fall, can i use the same LOR for next spring or fall 2014 for applying??? for how long is the LOR valid?“ So I thought to clear this doubt since many Students might have the same question in their minds. So let’s discuss this in Detail.
The Answer to Question depends on how the University requires the LOR.
- If it’s an Online LOR, where Professors will be rating you based on the Questions asked by the University. So if for some case you are not able to go in the Fall and postponed it to spring for the Same University then University will be keeping the Rating provided by your Professors. If you are trying for some other Universities then Professors will have to rate you again.
- If it’s an Hard Copy LOR, then it should be used within 1 year. Although it is not an official timeline for Validity of your LOR but Universities require an LOR which is recent, and in your Hard Copy LOR the Professors need to mention the Date on which they have Signed the LOR. So to be on the safer end use your Hard Copy LOR within 1 year of the date of Issue.
- So in your Case you can use your Hard-Copy LOR for Spring 2014, if it was created with an intention to attend Fall 2013. Most Universities will accept your Hard Copy LOR without any Problems, but it’s Safe to inquire them Directly.
I hope I was able to clear your Doubts. If you have any queries please feel free to ask me by using the Comment Box present below.
